This week's Wordful Wednesday is a subject near and dear to my heart. The exact wording is this: First tell us about either when you learned to read or about teaching your child to read and then also include your favorite book to read as a child or to your children now.
So, first, I don't remember actually learning to read, just one day I could. I took a newspaper to my mom and read her some words. She got me some books from the school (I was only 4 then) and I read them. I have devoured every thing since. I heard a speaker say that she can't not read if something is put before her. That is me. I read every sign, every reciept, and I have read countless shampoo bottles. I have to. I can't not read! (Apparently grammer is a problem, though...a double negative???) Anyway, asking me to pick my favorite children's book is like asking me to pick a favorite of my own children. It can't be done. (I have hundreds of children's books and plan on buying more. It's the one thing I CAN shop for with out becoming a total knob.) And the frustrating thing is, I know when I read everyone elses posts I'll be slapping my forehead thinking, "Yes! That is a favorite!"
But, I have included four here and not in any order, because I can't even do that! Of course I included Shel Silverstein. He has a way of making every day things absolutely hilarious. I mean, I really think a kid could turn into a t.v. set, or that the garbage will take over a whole house if it isn't taken out. There are also some poignent ones about losing your head and the whatiffs that crawl in our ears. Don't have a clue what I'm talking about? Better read them!
This book is one of the funnest to read out loud. Her other books are o.k., but this one is a classic! I love the last picture, and whoever thought pigs were dumb will change their mind when they've read this tale!
I picked one from my childhood that you can still find online. It's about a little old man who could not read (duh, from the title...) and his wife leaves him alone and he has to go shopping. He buys all the wrong things and in the end, decides to learn to read. I have always felt sorry for the little guy, and thought his wife was very smart to find a way to help him. Love it!

I read everything too! If it has words on it I read it. I love All the Places You'll Go! That was one of the first ones my mother gave me before I had children to start my own children's book collection.
While I don't quite have your same passion for reading, I do love children's books! Narrowing it down is hard to do, so here are a few:
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Click Clack Moo Cow that Type, Oh the Places You'll Go!, and pretty much any Eric Carle book!
I too share your passion for the kids books. I have WAY too many of them, but I always buy more. Can't get enough! I read to my kids a lot. Right now their favorites are 'Caps for Sale' and 'Kitten's First Full Moon.'
It's tough picking favorites books but I do have favorite children's book authors. Two that I love are Kevin Henkes and Robert McCloskey of 'Make Way for Ducklings' fame. My favorite illustrater has to be Marla Frazee. I think I own every book she has ever illustrated.
I remember reading 'The Little Old Man Who Could Not Read' at your parents house when we were in college. I love that one too.
I can't not read either! I shared your sentiments about choosing among favorites as well. At least there are so many good books in the world.
"All the Places to Love" is a favorite of mine because it is a sweet, lovey, little book that me and ALL my kids (even Mr. rough and tumble) love.
The only one of these we have is a light in the attic. I'm wirting the other ones down to pick up from the library
Thanks
Mommy Loves Her Baby/Daddy Loves His Baby. That has been a favorite of both my children and their parents. It has been loved to pieces.
Dr. Suess's ABC is a current favorite!
Sheep in a Jeep is a fun one!
I love books. I, too, read everything - cereal boxes, advertisements(even if I have no intention to buy), etc. My mother was a great reader and so was my father. I don't know of anyone in my family that doesn't like to read. I feel awful if I don't have a book going! I saw a cute cartoon once - it was a person sitting on a cloud with nothing to do and said to himself - "if only I had a magazine".
