So, I just heard Jeffrey say to Jack, "Let's go outside." This is such a fantastic idea and they do love to be outside but I will admit it takes a little prodding when there aren't any cousins or friends around for them to play with. So you can imagine the joy I felt when I heard it, only to realize that they were going outside on the game cube game they were playing. I know, what are they doing playing game cube but they hardly ever ask to play and I'm trying to be more of a yes mom (if I say it more maybe they will too???) so there they are. But not for long, they just gave me a great idea to send them outside to play.
My kids still say funny stuff sometimes. The other day Jane asked if I knew her January friend. I admitted I wasn't sure and she replied, "You know, my January friend, that's not real, that I just pretend to have." Ahh...Imaginary.
Then there's Jack who, while we were walking to the park, waxed poetic as he gazed longingly at Katie Anne lounging in the stroller. He said, and I quote, "One does miss riding in the stroller." "Yep," I said, "One does."
One thing I have liked since we moved here, is having Caller ID. I just like that little bit of knowledge before hand. I love to see ATK there, and know it's John. Or see that a friend is calling. The only time I don't answer a call is when it's a fund raising call, and it's very clear when it's one of those. But this morning I got to thinking, who else would I not answer the call from if I knew who it was? Maybe Seymour Butts? Or Hugh R. Underarrest? Definitely Ima Goner. But then, who would I hope to see on the Caller ID? Nothing funny comes to mind. But something really, really good would be nice. Sorry you had to read all that. I guess when I wrote the title randomness I really meant it. I've been away from real blogging for too long!
So, life goes on. We have 6 weeks until school is back in session. We made a trip to the DI today where the kids could spend a whole 50 cents each. I actually found some deals today...4 pair of levi's for the boys, 8 dessert plates that match what I have, and for which I have been too cheap to buy at Walmart, a new consequence* jar, and 4 t.v. trays that the kids like to use on a weekend movie night.
*Consequence jar...I should save this for a Tuesday tip, but oh well. So, I started a consequence jar at the beginning of the summer. It is filled with little candies and little pieces of paper. When they get their daily job done without too much whining and within a reasonable amount of time, they get a candy (and a pat on the back). When they don't meet those two criteria they get a piece of paper, upon which is written yet another job. When that job is done without whining and within a reasonable amount of time, they do not get a candy, just the pat on the back from me. And if that job doesn't get done, then there is another one and so on. Only once have they had to go back and get another job. Enough is enough! The point I was trying to make with having both consequences in the same jar is fairly self-explanatory. Taking a candy is better than taking a job, and taking a job means missing out on something yummy. Today we picked out a cuter jar, because you KNOW everything works better when it's in a cute jar. I think it will be around a while. I kind of like that all my kitchen drawers have been wiped out by someone other than me :)
And lastly, a moment of inspiration. Last night at 10:28 I watched as the international space station zoomed through the ladel of the big dipper and made it's way across the sky. Just think, 13 people up there partying all night long. It's an amazing adventure that we are a part of. That's MORE THAN ENOUGH RANDOMNESS FOR NOW!!!! So good morning, good evening, and good night!

'One does' find humor in that story.
It's hot.
I miss you.
Wish I could lay on your grass and eat popsicles and chat today.
My word verification is Methe,,,what does that say about me?
And if I don't see you later...Good afternoon, good evening and good night.
What is it with kids not wanting to play outside. Why can't Ridgecrest have decent thrift stores. I think I need to look up at the stars more often.
A few things...first off I loved the caller ID names. I have clear memeories of you writing names like that on your letter to missionaries, me, and others. Loved it!
So happy that you read Peace Like A River. It truly is a fantastic book! Some of the best writing of all time.
Lastly, I loved the consequence jar! oh, the endless possibilities for it. This I will be implementing at our house. So, I'm off to find a cute jar. Over and out.
Thanks for your randomness. I love reading it. My kids like to play outside, just not right now - too hot! I tried the consequence jar, it didn't work so hot for us. I don't know what does work for my kids?
I have missed your blogging. I just don't know how you keep coming up with all these ideas and things to think about. See you tomorrow night.
I wish you would have told us about the consequence jar at the BEGNIING OF SUMMER! We only have 3 weeks until school starts (aaarhhhg, noooooo!) and the critters are all going on "vacation" next week for 2 weeks, so this is it! I will hurry and find a cute jar and impliment that RIGHT NOW and see how they do for the next few days. Did I tell you about the "black hole" jar at our house? Another great way to get your windows washed, ceiling fans dusted and garbage cans sprayed out by someone other than you. Thanks for sharing your brilliant ideas.
Fun post! We don't have a consequence jar, but our kids don't get paid to do their jobs if they whine about them, it works fairly well.
