Games!

We are a game playing family. If there was that whole wagon thing where we had to pack up and get out, I can guarantee there would be at least one or two games in there (what else are you going to have to do (ha!)). So, I thought I'd show you our game closet, tell you about a few of our favorites, and then, if you have a minute, leave a comment about your favorite games. We can always use more!
I bought a shoe holder (on clearance in the fall when they were selling dorm room stuff) for all the cards, game pieces that get left out, dice, and other games. The only thing better would be a clear one, but hey, I'm cheap! Take note of the labels...they do help a little. Some of our favorites here are: Monopoly Deal (Jeffrey is SO lucky at this game), Cinqo, Uno and Skip Bo (the whole family can play these games), face cards for Nertz and Hand and Foot, and 'crap cards' so Katie Anne has some real deal things to hold while the rest of us play. She LOVES her 'dards'.
Our closet is organized. Really. At the top are party games, or in other words, games John will play when forced by his wife. Some of these include Guestures, Imaginiff, Cranium, and my favorite, Trivia for Dummies. We used to play Balderdash with a certain group of friends but it's been about 10 years since we've played. BUT! I hold out hope we'll play it again! Someday!
The next shelf down are fun games we can play with the boys. Hardly anyone will play Scrabble with me but, again, I'm holding out hope. This is our favorite shelf. We just got Dominion and it is alot of fun. These games aren't usually for a group, nothing too embarrassing here! These games are stategic, mind using games. Of the ones you see here, I like Dominion, Torres, Settlers, Blokus, and Scrabble. Someone must have been playing San Juan at the time, and that's the one I usually pick.
Next row...more fun games! Sequence is fun to play with another couple if you're doing date night or something. Try saying a movie quote with it every time you place a piece. Backgammon is there, but I usually play that on my little handheld planner. Down below you'll see more games for the kids. Sorry, Trouble, Operation...all necessities. My kids play Husker Du at my mom's so I don't own that one, but it's a really fun matching game. Mancala (aka the Marble game) is another staple.

Wondering WHY you should play games? It's so fun! I have learned a lot about myself, my husband, my kids, and a whole slew of other people by observing their game playing. My kids would rather do this than watch movies or just about anything. In fact, I had to take away Monopoly Deal for a while so they'd do something else!
Wondering HOW to get all of these? Well, Walmart, Amazon for the more expensive ones, and your nearest, nicest secondhand store. We also get a lot of games as Christmas Gifts and it never hurts to drop hints!
Wondering WHEN to play all of these? Winter is great game playing time. Also Summer, Fall, and Spring. If I use my menu planner to it's fullest, dinner is made and I will have a few minutes and we can sneak in a game. Jane and I just played Break the Ice before she went to her nap.
Wondering WHO can play games? Everyone! Katie Anne loves to play Uno, you just have to play by her rules. The boys are playing pretty sophisticated games, and they don't always get the whole picture, but it's better than nothing! When they play Acquire you should hear the math they are spouting out. Just like in Ratatouille when he says "Anyone can cook" I say, "Anyone can play!"
In the car we have little games we can play while we're waiting for someone, or when we're driving a gazillion miles to the beach (or where ever...). Just start!

Oh, I'm so jealous. Mike absolutley HATES games. I can't even force him to play. At dinner time we have a question box that we ask a question from each night. The other night the question was "What is something you really hate?" His answer: games! It's sad really because I LOVE to play games. So do my kids.

We got Connect Four and Perfection for Chirstmas. The kids really like those, but my favorite is Five Crowns. It's a fun and fast moving card game. Highly recommended.

Sorry I've been out of the loop. We got your card for Christmas! Thanks! We love games too! Ticket to ride has been pretty fun for me lately.

Great post! I love Apples to Apples. Spoons is a great card game. Moods is the best girls night game ever! If only it were still being made. We just discovered Blokus. Love it.

I love Acquire, Rook, Phase 10, Cinco, Gin Rummy (and all it's versions), Backgammon and any game I can get someone to play with me. Sometimes, I put "play a game with mom" on the kid's job list.

We love games too. We even have a game book we created to help us remember all the rules for games that have been passed down.

Take Two is a fun one where each person works separately to use all their letters in a scrabble arrangement. Take Two
is a fast-paced, non-turn-based Scrabble variant played without a board. Tiles are placed face-down in the middle of the table in a communal pool and each player is given seven tiles to start. From their starting tiles, each player tries to build his own valid Scrabble grid—players do not use each other's grid or tiles. When a player successfully uses all of her face-up tiles, she shouts "take two", and every player takes two more tiles. Play continues until there are no more tiles left to draw. The person who creates the first complete grid when all the tiles run out gets all the tiles no one could use in their grids. Points are counted as the sum of all tiles in the grid. Tiles that are used in two words are counted twice.

For large groups, we play Take Two in teams of two - and use the scrabble tiles from two scrabble games.

We also like nine card. We play it every Sunday night after dinner - as it is something Grandma can play and enjoy.

This year one new game we got was Querkle. It is fun.

Times Up is another fun new game. You are trying to guess the individuals' names (on cards), but since you do each name multiple times (in various rounds), it works even if you aren't very good in knowing something about a variety of celebrities.

We also like Acquire, Carcassonne, and Five Crowns.

Wow! This post makes me want to come over and play a game! I love playing games, but not everyone in my family shares this so it makes it a bit tough. What are your car games? That sounds fun too! :)

We've really liked San Juan, but we still enjoy a good game of Ticket to Ride and Catan. A extended family favorite is Shang-hi Rummy!

I love playing games and my kids love it too! I need a game closet like yours. I like that there are taller shelves for games that maybe you don't want the kids into. Our games are in a cabinet that the kids get into. Sometimes we have pieces everywhere and that drives me nuts. We just got a new game for Christmas and it is called Pictureka. It is a lot of fun for young kids because you don't have to be able to read. It is fun for adults especially if you like a challenge of finding something. I really enjoy playing it with my boys. The slogan on the front is "Find if fast, find it first!" You will have to check it out. The age on it is 6+, but my 4 year old plays it just fine.

We got "Sync Up" for Christmas and have laughed a ton playing with Cheri (who came to visit) and some friends. The game gives you a category (Pizza) and then 4 subcategories (a topping, a restaurant, etc.) in which you try to give the exact same answer as your partner (which changes each round) at the exact same time in order to advance on the board. Love it! I heard it was voted Party Game of the year 2009.

I can't believe you don't have my favorite game, Loaded Question. But guess what, I like it so much, I bought it for our famiy for Christmas in 08. Trying to think of a fun game to buy our family in 09, I remembered how much I loved Loaded Question, so bought it and wrapped it, then... saw it in our game closet. I've been wondering who to give it to. Come visit me and you can have it... I'll save it for 11 months... that gives you almost all year to come and see me. If you're not here by December 1, 2010, I'm giving it to someone else next Christmas. :) Anyway, other fun games we love (and we LOVE to play games too): Battle of the Sexes if fun for a group date. Pass the pig and Farkle are fun games that the kids can play. (trying to think of games others have not mentioned) If I think of any more, I'll make another comment.

SO: Come and visit me and you'll get a new game!! Loaded Question is super fun and you get to know all kinds of stuff about the people you play. A question is read. For example: How could you make a million dollars really fast. Then everyone answers the question except one person, and that person has to say who said what - get points for answering correctly. It's really, really fun with siblings and spouses!! A little more obvious when you play with your 7 year old. :)

I just LOVE reading your blog. I finally caught up and just feel inspired. We need to play more games because, surprisingly, it brings peace into our home. The kids still all love Candyland and Casper and Whitney like Battleship. They are having a great time with the Wii. You should see Stewart box. Love you, Kathryn!
