My mom had a birthday coming up and I had no idea what to get her. And then I heard it...
The Utah Symphony would be playing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue at Abravenel Hall. Not only would she love it, but maybe I could go with her, because I knew I would love it too!
I called the BC sisters and we went in on her ticket. The rest of us who could go bought our own and we made a night of it.
We ate dinner at Little America before heading over to listen to the warming up of the instruments.

Here we are...Kraig, Stacy, Dad, Mom, Me, and John who is taking the pic.

I wish I had video of the pianist as his fingers flew up and down the keyboard. It's really insane actually to imagine one person hitting all of those notes. I was especially enthralled with the players feet. It seemed to me they were like little black shoe marionettes being danced around by an unseen puppeteer.
I love Rhapsody in Blue. When I was a senior in high school I had some friends who lived way out in Mendon. It took almost the same amount of time to listen to RinB as it did to drive out there, and the road had ups and downs in just the right places. By the time it reached the last 3 minutes where the music just fills every part of me I would be leading wildly (with both hands) and speeding down the road. Honestly exhilerating.
I still lead it whenever I listen to it whether driving or cooking or cleaning, with the symphony being the exception, much to John's relief.
My cute mom and dad.
The women...yes we all wore red, without any coordinating on our part.
(stole this pic from Kraig...Thanks!)
