Hey y'all! I have not felt well but thanks to modern medicine, I feel like I'm getting back to my normal self! I still wanted to do a tips post, and give a few ideas for summer time activities with the kids! Are you ready? Well, ready or not, here they come (the kids, you know, the ones that are getting out of school any day now!)
I HIGHLY suggest you check out Chocolate on My Craniums site for all kinds of ideas, but especially her Cool Summer Days ideas. I also love Donna's Day for all kinds of recipes and activities.
Also, make sure you've signed up for your library's reading program. Or know when you can sign up. Barnes and Noble also has a reading program where a kid can earn a free book. If you don't live by one, perhaps you could see if there's one near you on your summer trip! Everything is downloadable so you don't have to go to the store til you are ready.
Do you plan on doing a little school work? I know my kids need to practice handwriting. But most kids would rather do Science experiments. It's also a good time to let them in the kitchen, if you haven't done that already.
Last year on the first day of summer my kids woke up to string wrapped around everything, each child having a string attached to their bed to follow under chairs, over tables, and through doors until they came to a simple prize at the end...books to read, a game, or new waterguns. This year I think I'll do a treasure hunt. This is as fun for me as it is for them!
Some other fun ideas include:
*Give everyone a dollar and head to the grocery store. Set whatever rules you like (like no candy) and see what you can gather for lunch!
*Give everyone a dollar and go to the Goodwill or Deseret Industries. Everyone will have fun searching for a fun treasure.
*Go somewhere you haven't been before (or for a while)...even if it's a park, a restaurant, or even a forgotten spot in your back yard.
*Have a picnic. If you have a playset of dishes, use those!
*Watch a movie from your childhood with your kids.
*Organize a little neighborhood party.
And because there's still that whole business of running the house, make a summer job chart. And for those times when they are crazy you can a) have a consequence jar full of odd jobs that they can do or b) go out for ice cream. Have a fun summer!
P.S. What plans do you have? Anything you'd like to share, please do!

I've got a post in the works for a tutorial on sewing one's own Cool Summer Days calendar. :D
Love your idea of the first day of summer with a treasure hunt!
Hmmm, these ideas are so much better than duct-taping them to a chair in front of the t.v. for the summer. I guess I'll have to give them a try! ;)
I, too, love your first day of Summer idea.
Glad you're feeling better! I loved your summer ideas, especially the string/treasure hunt idea. Our summer will start out with a bang (aka cross-country move), but hopefully it will slow down and we can relax with your GREAT ideas!
Hi Katherine, I love your ideas, so fun! I just wanted to let you know Gregg and I are trying to start a little internet buisiness with a job chart idea... we're in the very beginning stages right now so it's just on-line and free for anyone to tryout. We're trying to get feed back from people on it. If you're interested it's myjobchart.com you customize the jobs and the rewards and the point values for all. Anyway, just an idea! :) I love your blog!
Thanks for the tips! I'll have to try them. I am totally trying to find fun things to do this summer. We found a slip and slide for $2 at Kohl's on clearance and I plan on getting a LOT of use out of that this summer. With Caden not me, of course. LOL :)
ooh, I'm going to have to check out all those links when I have more time. Glad you're feeling better, what did you have?
Becky is doing "summer boredom busters". Everyone participating makes a kit for each person in the group. Then you have that many activities/crafts/etc for you kids to do during the summer. I'm doing 2-playdough with tools & pasta necklaces.
I love the new background btw!
Those are all great ideas. I should have read your blog when my kids got out of school!!! Sounds like you will have a lot of fun.
Our "Black hole Jar" Saves me from the big messes kids leave around in the summer. I just get a mason jar and put black card stock in side it so the kids can't see what's in it. If they leave something laying around, and I have to pick it up, it goes in the black hole. If they want to get it out, they pick a job that's in the black hole jar and do the job to get it out. Some are easy (wash a window) some are not so fun (scrub the toilet with a pummis stone. They never know what they will get. It sure helps keep the clutter put up!! Thanks for all the great ideas.
